I CAN HELP!

Poor Posture, WRMSDs & their Cost to Employers

Statistics

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) are a group of painful disorders of muscles, tendons, and nerves. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, thoracic outlet syndrome, tension neck syndrome and low back pain are examples.

WRMSDs are the result of poor posture and repetitive movements caused by prolonged sitting in workplace environments. They are characterized by forward head posture, rounded shoulders, and kyphosis and lordosis of the spine.

HERE ARE SOME EYE OPENING STATISTICS
  • U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 650,000 work-related musculoskeletaldisorders (WRMSDs), resulting in costs to employers of over 20 billion dollars. These costs include Worker's Compensation and medical expenses, the latter of which are increasing 2.5 times faster than benefit costs.

  • $1 of every $3 of Worker's Compensation costs are spent on occupational musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)

  • Employers pay $15-20 billion per year in Worker's Compensation costs for lost workdays.

  • Indirect costs are 3 to 5 times higher, reaching approximately $150 billion per year. These include absenteeism, staff replacement and retraining, and lost productivity

and consider this..

1.     Sitting for more than 6 hours a day is associated with obesity and early mortality

 2.     Sitting for more than 6 hours a day results in postural distortion patterns that also lead to early mortality

3. THEREFORE ...obesity + postural distortions = two-fold increase in risk for early mortality

Companies with established

corporate wellness programs..

  • are in a better position to bargain with health insurance companies for a discount on premiums because they can demonstrate less risk among those employees who are part of the program.

  • Employees begin to change and improve other health-related lifestyle behaviors such as healthier eating habits and smoking cessation.

  • Employees develop a sense of camaraderie during participation in wellness activities, making them team building experiences.

  • Healthier employees are able to manage stress easier, making them more productive. NASA found that the productivity of sedentary office workers decreased 50% in the final two hours of the day while exercisers worked at full pace all day.
